Monday's Munchies: Scottish Shortbread

Before you ask...I cannot give anyone this secret family recipe.  This is the BEST shortbread in the world!!!!  I do want to share some photos with you though, and if you ever want to taste it, just let me know and I'll share some with you.

Once you add all the 'secret ingredients', you combine them together by hand.  This is one very hard job!  It takes a lot of muscles because you use your bare hands to mix it.  My hands always get red and tired when I make this, but it's worth it!!!

Squishing the dough together.

Here I am pounding it with my hands, trying to get it to stick together.

 Still working on it!

 Almost done!!

FINALLY!!  The dough is formed and I can get it ready to cut into pieces!!

Once I got the dough mixed into a solid block, I cut it into 4 equal chunks.  Then I flattened and pounded the chunks into long strips and poked them all over with a fork.

I then cut the strips into individual pieces and placed them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

 Ready for the oven!

Once it's done baking, it comes out of the oven smelling wonderful!!!  If I can keep my Dad and brother away from them long enough for them to cool, there will be plenty to share!  They really are yummy, especially when they're cool!  =)

All done, ready to eat!!!!!
See that photo above?  All I have left is the picture, the Shortbread is all gone now.  =(

This is a family favorite at Christmas time, but we eat it anytime.  What are your favorite family cookies?

Family Fridays: Meatloaf

Tonight for dinner I chose to make meatloaf and veggies.

Along with the meatloaf, I made carrots, and creamed corn (yuck), and I also added bread to complete the meal.

I made the meatloaf from scratch.  Along with the meat, I added ketchup, onion powder, milk, bread crumbs (from a loaf), salt, pepper, and eggs.  I also added a secret spice.  =)  On the top of the formed meatloaf, I added strips of turkey bacon.  You can use real bacon if you want.

 Uncooked meatloaf topped with bacon!

This looks yummy!  Can't you just smell it? =)

Sliced piece of meatloaf with bacon!!

I set the table with a red tablecloth and added a cream colored candle in the middle to make it look pretty.

I made strawberry lemonade for everyone to drink. Yum!  Tasted like summer!!  =)

Except for the corn, this was a great meal!  Does anyone have ideas for my Friday family meals?  If you do, post them here and I will try to make them some time....if I like them.  ha ha

'What's That?' Wednesday: Old Kitchens to New Kitchens

Kitchens have come a long way! When you look at these pictures you'll see how styles have changed over the years. They went from old and colorful to modern and stainless steel. Here are some fun photos showing you the differences in kitchens from the 1950's until now. Did you ever have a kitchen that looked like any of these?

1950's - Kitchens were simple and colorful except the appliances, they were mostly white. Pink and teal were the most popular colors in kitchens from the 50's.

1960's - It was all about wooden cabinets in the 60's. Appliances came in colors now, probably because the cabinets were so plain.

1970's - You're going to need sunglasses for these kitchens!! The colors were mostly burnt orange, olive green and harvest gold. The patterns were loud and busy with lots of flowers.

1980's - It looks like things calmed down in the 80's. White and brown were the popular colors. After the loud 70's, they probably wanted plain colors.

1990's - The 90's brought lighter wood tones and more white. Modern light fixtures and better spaces for all the modern appliances that started coming out.

2000 - Wood cabinets got darker and more formal. Fancy trim, special lights and lots of granite counters were used.

2010 - Kitchens now are becoming very modern. These examples are over the top. Clean lines, nothing on the counters and flat cabinets with no handles or stainless steel ones. They are not very cozy either.

My favorite kitchens are from the 2000's. I like the look of them because they are cozy and comfortable. Here is a photo of my dream kitchen. It has a great eat-in area, and GREAT appliances with lots of work space.

What's your dream kitchen look like?

Monday's Munchies : Creme de Menthe Cookies

I made delicious Creme de Menthe Cookies, and used a family Chocolate Chip cookie recipe as the base.  All I did was substitute Andes Candies pieces for the Chocolate Chips.

Here is the recipe:

Sift together 1 cup plus 2 tbsp. flour, 1/2 tsp. baking soda and 1/2 tsp. salt. Add 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 egg and 1/2 cup shortening.

Blend all ingredients. Add 1/2 pkg (12oz) or 1 small (6oz) full pkg. of Andes Candies Creme de Menthe pieces. Drop by tsp. on ungreased sheet.

Bake at 375° for 10-12 min.      Makes ~50

One batch done, one cooking, and one ready to go!
Enjoy them and remember...Serve with love! ☺

After I made the cookies I decide to package them up, and put them in a little baggie with 'my card' to share with my friends.  I handed some of them out at church yesterday.

Packing up the cookies.

All ready to go!

If you didn't get one and would like my card and a free treat, just leave me a message.  Mom says that this offer is only for my local friends, sorry if you live far away.
